You could visit 100 different websites on a hunt for information about the 2012 prophesy. If you do, you’ll end up with 100 different points of view about what it’s all about. Websites produced by religious zealots proclaim the end of the world (again). Some websites promote the recent movie, and some promote other media for sale produced by so called experts on the subject. A selection of New Age sites with a more positive message also exist for those interested, among many others that think we’re all going to get blown to smithereens when the planet Nibiru collides with us. Or a huge comet, or a massive asteroid, or whatever.
Clicking here will take you to the Wikipedia entry (thanks to them) on the Maya calendar, which is the said source of prophesy. I would skip most of the info unless you’re a geek, and scroll down to the section titled “Long Count.” Here’s a relevant clip from the page.:
“Misinterpretation of the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar is the basis for a popular belief that a cataclysm will take place on December 21, 2012. December 21, 2012 is simply the day that the calendar will go to the next b’ak’tun, at Long Count 220.127.116.11.0. The date on which the calendar will go to the next piktun (a complete series of 20 b’ak’tuns), at Long Count 18.104.22.168.0.0, will be on October 13, 4772.”
We do live in troubled times. Conflicts exist around the globe. Natural disasters and freak weather conditions are becoming more common, even to the point of no longer coming as a surprise when they occur.
Only a matter of days after official summertime in the UK, there was snow in some areas. This is of particular interest as we had a very mild winter this year compared with a few previous. This of course is the latest, if a very mild example of freak weather. It seems to be becoming a global phenomenon however, that the current season can no longer be associated with a particular set of weather conditions.
Wars, conflicts, global warming and contempt for the planet that sustains us has a lot more to do with the situation we find ourselves in in the 21st century, than a 5000 year old calendar..
